About This Place

First started in late 2007, Kasey's Mobile Game Review (then just a regular feature of Kasey's Korner) started as a simul-post between here and IGN. Later I realized there's no reason to post it twice, when I can use the traffic on my own site. so, here we are, in 2010, and the mobile game industry has grown a bit. What do you think?

KMGR of Commandos

Allied Commando
Commandos is an old EIDOS 2D game that basically is a combat-oriented puzzle. The mobile version did not change much. The idea is command a team of different special operations soldiers in WW2 in enemy territory, performing various missions of sabotage, assassination, espionage, and such. The problem with this game is that the missions are too long, and lack of mid-mission save, makes the game WAY TOO frustrating, and the complexity is a turn off.

Commandos have you command one or special ops guys, each of them with special abilities. The green beret can use knife, shovel, gun, and bait. Others can hide in shadow, distract guard, and so on. The idea generally is to get into an area, bypass the guards, do the job, and get out. The catch is, of course, it's never that simple.

The game has so many things you can do, you can lose track of what needs to be done. The green beret for example, has a shovel which allows him to hide on any soft ground (not concrete or asphalt) and be invisible in about 2 seconds, and get out just as fast. He can also do silent attack on enemies using his knife, or louder attacks with his gun. He can also carry bodies (to be out of view) or explosive barrel (to cause an explosion, of course!). He can also use one of the few "noisemaker baits" to distract the guards.

You also get a binocular, which is basically a way for you to see the whole map without needing to be physically there. It is also a way to see which way the enemy is looking (i.e., their "vision cone") which is important for you to plan your infiltration and exfiltration routes.

The problem then is when you snuck by 4-5 guards, only to be seen by the sixth and instantly fail the mission, is not exactly conducive to one's relaxation. And apparently, you can only keep an eye on ONE guard at a time. Argh!

Thenof course, there's the problem of why only the green beret can move bodies, when others can simply drag. Then there's the problem that green beret is created by Kennedy before the Vietnam War, and thus does NOT exist in WW2!

Sorry, but this game is about 3 years too late to the market. and really needs to be further simplified and historical problems fixed up.

Overall rating: 6 out of 10
Pros: classic Commandos gameplay and heritage
Cons: too complicated for a mobile phone, way too frustrating
Verdict: only for nostalgic fans, but they should play on a PC, not a mobile
