About This Place

First started in late 2007, Kasey's Mobile Game Review (then just a regular feature of Kasey's Korner) started as a simul-post between here and IGN. Later I realized there's no reason to post it twice, when I can use the traffic on my own site. so, here we are, in 2010, and the mobile game industry has grown a bit. What do you think?

KMGR of "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2" mobile

Actually, the real title is "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Force Recon", and while it's marketed as COD:MW 2 mobile, it is actually completed UNRELATED to COD MW2. This is a normal 2D shooter with a completely unrelated story line. As a 2D shooter, it ain't bad, but there's nothing special about it, but it has a lousy storyline, and takes liberties with so many realities it's basically dumb.

The storyline is about a marine recon company's grunt... Some sort of major terrorist attack is taking over the city of Hermosilla Mexico, and the Mexican president asked the US for help, and the US sent in the Marines. The problem is the game is completely unauthentic when you look into the details.

First of all, you are issued what looks like an MP-5. Don't these game designers have researchers? Marines only issue M-16A4's to the grunts! And don't tell me that's some fancy new weapon like SCAR either.

Then there's this part about shooting "bazookas" at certain targets. Hello! Bazooka is a WW2 term! The REAL USMC light anti-tank weapon is the LAW rocket! (And that doesn't look like a LAW rocket either!)

Then there's this problem with a normal grunt somehow got tapped for a SNIPER assignment, and before that, a door-gunner assignment. I can buy that the door gunner was wounded or something and you need a gunner, but a SNIPER? Marines, esp. force recon, have dedicated sniper/observer teams. Sniper is almost NEVER assigned ALONE.

What's worse, the game can't even make sense! In the sniper segment, you're supposed to protect this "ranger" who will go in to do a sneak and peek. Then in the next mission you're a special forces soldier (out of 7th Special Forces Group) in the SAME location, to defuse some bombs found by the ranger in the previous mission. HELLO! Why would I snipe off all the guards, alert the rest to their absence, AND not take care of the bombs right then and there, but send in someone ELSE to defuse the thing? MAKES NO SENSE!

Okay, let's ignore all that for the moment. How is the gameplay? Unfortunately, NOT that well either. In general, you are a "lone wolf", shoot at various things. To make sure you don't feel completely alone, every once in a while you run into fellow soldiers holding some position, but they won't follow you... and you need to go on and leave them behind. That is NOT how the military works, but we'll let that slide for now.

Enemies are dumb. Basically, they pop out, and you hold down the trigger to shoot them before they shoot you, and hopefully you kill them BEFORE they shoot back. it's mainly a "quick-draw" contest. There are also a lot of "cover" spots where you can hide, and unleash grenades on the enemy if there's quite a few of them. With only 3 grenades (but occasional reloads at 'crates') you may want to save them for big groups. If you see a place to take cover, there's probably an enemy (or more) just ahead. Enemies don't "dodge", so they are rather easy to kill. They do occasional take cover, but then they become vulnerable to grenades, and they don't throw grenades at you. Hmmm...

The only tough opponent you will see is at the finale, against the boss, so to speak. And that's with a button just for grenades, then a "weapon switch" button as well?

The map is mostly a single-path, with occasional "go-around" so you can come up on enemies from behind. There are occasional side-activities like 'door gunner' and 'sniper', as well as 'turret gunner' scenes where you need to hold off some stupid kamikaze enemies. However, the main game is shooting other soldiers.

You "auto-heal" when you are not in contact, which is fine, but as the enemy does NOT pursue you, just run away and come back. In other words, this game is WAY TOO EASY, except in the special segments, then it becomes way too hard until you figure out the "trick", then it becomes way too easy again.

Graphics is below par, as this is an slightly-overhead 2D shooter, nothing special about it.

All in all, COD:MW RC is an also-ran, with inaccurate weapons and terminology, uneven difficulty levels, stupid plot mistakes, and uninspired gameplay, it is just a below average game.

Overall rating: 6 out of 10
Pros: easy to pick up, not bad as a 2D shooter
Cons: unrelated to COD:MW, inaccurate facts, uninspired gameplay
Verdict: you can find better shooters than this short game that barely is worth the name it bears
